ASIS UK Chapter Chair Report – May

Is Summer finally here? Some will have had opportunity to enjoy the May Bank Holiday weekends, however, I also recognise the huge contribution many of our security teams and colleagues face as they continue to support and stand alongside colleagues with frontline duties as we move towards a sense of easement again, with more opportunity to begin socialising indoors as well as outside.

It is so important to look out for one another and “listen”, sometimes to the silence, to know your help may be needed.  Our current charity PTSD Resolution offers a free service to ASIS members and their families by calling 0300 3020551 or emailing [email protected].

Global security challenges remaining unchanged in May and we saw challenges arise from Columbia facing strikes, civil demonstrations and acts of vandalism; to Israel with over 4000 missile attacks. Critical travel restrictions and mass protests all affecting the current COVID challenges; as well as the increasing supply chain and security fall out for the teams to address and manage.

It struck me that we now expect more and more from our teams, not just addressing and managing the brilliant basics of security prevention on a daily basis; but also becoming adept at scanning for the potential in situations internally and externally, communicating those in a timely and understandable way, being agile to put mitigations in place, being ready to react, communicate wider than ever before all whilst managing to stay motivated, engaged and proactive on other duties that are tasked.  I continue to wonder how do we maintain this?  Often my contribution to help is to make sure I say “thank you” or give acknowledgement for the service each member offers.  A kind word or even a smile can make someone’s day, so I ask each of you reading this to do something today to make a positive difference to a colleague or a frontline officer; pick up the phone and say something nice, send an acknowledgement email or take a minute to speak to a member of the team in person.

The UK Chapter leads organising the member seminars are working hard to bring you another well informed Summer member seminar event on June 24 starting at 1pm. Please register to attend HERE, you will be sent information on joining nearer the time.

We also expect many of you will want to get to know the Board, our wider working groups, communities and regions so I will be running a set of quick introduction interviews to hear from them on their contributions to ASIS, the Chapter and security topics, called “ASIS Faces & Business Cases” so keep an eye out for these!

It is so important we have members helping and contributing to these working groups and sharing articles or items of interest for our members to keep informed.  If you would like to get involved, please get in touch.

Best wishes,

Letitia Emeana CPP PSP
